Difference between chronic fatigue and temporary fatigue
Being well rested every day is important!
Fatigue seems to be the new disease of the century. Let's just ask someone how they are, and the most common response is often: "I'm fine, tired, but fine." Non, it is not OK ! We must not let fatigue become commonplace, we will end up getting used to it even though it is not a “normal” state. Let's be clear, it is not "abnormal" to be tired, it is however abnormal to consider fatigue as part of our daily life. Especially since we can remedy it by simple and natural means.
In addition, fatigue can cause many more or less disabling inconveniences: headaches, muscle pain, a state of extreme weariness which can sometimes lead to depression! Without forgetting that “when we are tired, we are sometimes tiring” for those around us.
To properly treat fatigue, it is important to determine the cause:
- Chronic fatigue is defined by fatigue persisting for more than 6 months, not explained by traditional reasons and not improving with rest. Alongside the symptom of intense fatigue, other more minor symptoms can be added: muscle pain, headaches, difficulty concentrating, etc. Some people can also feel a real “slump” or depressive state. Persistent fatigue can also be explained by an underlying illness (hypothyroidism, depression, significant obesity, infection, etc.) or by taking certain medications. If the fatigue is significant and long-lasting, it is advisable to refer to a doctor who can determine the cause and find the most appropriate treatment.
- In contrast, temporary fatigue , as its name suggests, is a state of fatigue that can last up to 6 months. In this case the fatigue can be physical, due to lack of sleep for example, or moral, due to constant stress at work or exhausting daily worries. It is then possible to use, among other things, natural products, such as essential oils or food supplements to help your body get rid of this feeling of exhaustion. It is important to add that this type of fatigue can also be due to a poor diet and a lack of vitamins and minerals, so it is important to reconsider your diet and possibly consult a doctor or nutritionist.
Fatigue is therefore considered normal if it follows a period of stress, sport, intense work or short nights: a good night's rest, a few natural treatments and a vacation are generally enough to get rid of it!
Symptoms of fatigue
The symptoms of temporary or chronic fatigue are well known:
- Lack of strength in the morning even after a good night's sleep
- Decreased energy in general
- Difficulty concentrating
- Sad mood, less enthusiasm and joy of living
- Every little effort costs you a lot of energy
- Little motivation to move or leave the house
Daily fatigue is tiring! We feel tired, exhausted and often we don't really know why. Fatigue is often a warning signal from the body: something is wrong! Most often it is “normal” fatigue, due to too intense physical activity or a bad night's sleep. Nothing alarming and nothing a good night's sleep can't fix.
It is therefore important to identify the fatigue we are facing in order to fight effectively and quickly against this state of weariness. Understanding fatigue is essential to successfully treating it. There is no point taking essential oils that will help you sleep well if you already sleep like a log. What you are missing in this case is perhaps just a little tone and energy.
Different types of temporary fatigue:
- Physical fatigue: After an intense day of sport or after helping a friend move, we feel tired and muscle pain may occur. This is good fatigue, physical fatigue -> see our recipes at the beginning of the file.
- Psychological fatigue: due to stress, overwork, an ever-increasing expectation to do things quickly and well, this psychological fatigue is more difficult to treat. You must succeed in reducing sources of stress and learn to relax.
- Fatigue due to sleep disorders: This may be sleep apnea, non-restorative sleep or insomnia (see our file: Insomnia? How to sleep well with essential oils).
- Fatigue due to “bad” eating habits: Our diet plays a vital role in our health. You must not lack any essential vitamins and have a balanced intake of proteins, carbohydrates, etc. Good eating habits are essential to have tone and energy on a daily basis.
- Asthenia: great fatigue felt without specific causes
In the event that fatigue is temporary, due, for example, to an intense period at work, precautions should be taken and a day of rest should be planned in order to regain all the necessary strength. But if you feel that, for several months in a row, you are tired and lacking strength, it may be a warning signal that your body is sending you.
The causes of fatigue and poor sleep are sometimes trivial, but there are situations where medical follow-up is necessary. If you think your fatigue is caused by lack of sleep, consult our special insomnia file at the bottom of this article. Here are the main causes of fatigue that you can easily get rid of on your own (sometimes with the help of certain essential oils): Stress, lack of sleep or disturbed sleep, lack of vitamins, unbalanced diet.
Chronic or persistent fatigue, pay attention to your health!!
As we have already mentioned, if you suffer from chronic fatigue it is then necessary to consult a doctor!
Here are the main problems that can manifest themselves:
- Thyroid problems
- Anemia
- All kinds of infections
- Depression
- Obesity
In any case, if after having rested properly you do not feel any improvement, consult a doctor to find the cause of this persistent fatigue.
The best essential oils against fatigue
Essential oils should help you effectively combat fatigue and regain the tone and energy necessary to have a good day and a good night!
Here is a list of some of the most effective essential oils for treating fatigue:
Peppermint essential oil:
Invigorating and stimulating, this essential oil works wonders in cases of general fatigue (mental and physical), it is also very effective in cases of lack of concentration.

Warning: Do not use in: children under 8 years of age, pregnant or breastfeeding women, elderly people, epileptics, hypertensive people and in cases of hormone-dependent cancers or mastosis. NEVER use pure on the skin (always strongly diluted in a vegetable oil).
Chinese cinnamon essential oil:
It is a physical stimulant, useful in cases of general fatigue or deep fatigue. Use only one drop at a time for aromatic diffusions, as there is a risk of irritation of the respiratory tract!
Use: in massage for a toning effect: always dilute to a maximum of 5% in a virgin oil: 5 drops of cinnamon in 100 drops of virgin oil.
Warning: Cinnamon essential oil is strongly dermocaustic, never use it pure on the skin. Always dilute it heavily. In absorption, use only for a very short period. Do not use in: children under 12 years of age, pregnant or breastfeeding women, in case of liver pathologies. Do not massage too large areas (only massage the lower back for example).

Warning: Do not use in: children under 8 years old, pregnant or breastfeeding women. Dilute in fatty oil.
Ylang Ylang essential oil:
Relaxing energy! Invigorating and relaxing at the same time... it may seem paradoxical but Ylang Ylang essential oil helps you both to relax (it has recognized cardiac regulation virtues) and to replenish your energy thanks to its stimulating and anti-fatigue action (physical, nervous and mental).
Very famous for its aphrodisiac properties, it is, wrongly, less known for its positive action against peaks of stress, nervousness and anxiety.
Warning: Do not use in: children under 8 years old, pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Fine lavender essential oil:
It is best known and famous for its powerful relaxing properties and also very popular for relieving muscle pain, rheumatism and arthritis. By helping you rest, it allows you to replenish your energy more easily.
Warning: Do not use in: children under 8 years old, pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Fatigue can be a sign of a larger illness / when to consult your doctor?!
Fatigue is the signal that our body uses to tell us to rest, but not only that! It can also be the first sign that something is seriously wrong. It is important not to neglect this symptom. Without alarming you, if your fatigue is really persistent despite all the precautions taken and sleep that seems okay to you, it may be a sign of an underlying illness.
Fatigue can hide, among other things:
Anemia: a lack of iron in our body leading to a lack of energy
Hypothyroidism: this is an insufficient production of hormones by the thyroid gland, leading to a slowdown in metabolism. Unexplainable weight gain can also be a sign of hypothyroidism.
Mononucleosis: of infectious origin, this is a viral disease caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. It most often manifests itself as extreme fatigue.
This is a short, non-exhaustive list. But most of these diseases can be detected by a simple blood test with your doctor.
When to consult your doctor?
We advise you to consult your doctor in the following cases:
- If your fatigue persists for more than 3 months
- If you have already tried different remedies without seeing significant effects. (Please note, with essential oils, a delay of one to two weeks is necessary before obtaining noticeable results)
- If other symptoms are added in addition to fatigue (weight gain, malaise, muscle pain, lack of appetite, etc.)
- If you feel depressed and even the smallest daily task seems insurmountable
- If you are tired despite a healthy lifestyle (balanced diet, regular exercise, etc.)
If in doubt or simply to reassure yourself, do not hesitate to consult your doctor who will ask you the right questions to verify that the fatigue you feel does not hide anything more serious.
Phytotherapy and other natural anti-fatigue remedies
In addition to essential oils, many natural remedies can be considered.
Royal jelly works miracles on the sluggishness between two seasons. Certain cocktails based on vitamins and citrus fruits will also give you an immediate boost!
Herbal medicine can also be of great help:
There are two main families: adaptogenic plants and stimulating plants.
Adaptogenic plants combat stress overall by stimulating the natural defenses and increasing the body's vitality. We mainly find:
Ginseng: anti-stress par excellence
Eleutherococcus: stimulates the central nervous system and the adrenal glands, helping the body to better adapt to stress
Rhodalia: also addresses memory problems by improving concentration. Also note that all adaptogenic plants are also known to improve sexual performance... A word to the wise ;)
Stimulating plants are often rich in caffeine: coffee, black tea, green tea, cinnamon and mate.
Bonus recipe: Energizing medal with essential oils against office fatigue
Ingredients:
- 42 gr. beeswax
- 8 drops of peppermint essential oil
- 7 drops of lemon essential oil
- 17 drops of fine lavender essential oil
- 8 gr. stearic acid
Preparation and use: Melt the beeswax and stearic acid. Then add the essential oils and pour everything into a mold (do not exceed a thickness of 0.5cm for better diffusion). Wait a bit for your preparation to begin to harden, then decorate it with flower petals or other seeds if you wish. Place a toothpick at one end of your medal to form an opening. Once unmolded, you can attach your medal using a string to your workplace for a light energizing and relaxing scent.
Our daily advice
- DID YOU KNOW: Some people need 5 hours of sleep while you struggle to get out of bed after a good 8 hours of rest? Recent studies have shown that our genetic heritage conditions our need for sleep.
- Keep a balanced diet, if you think you need a greater vitamin intake we advise you to consult your doctor who will then be able to prescribe food supplements (vitamins B, D, magnesium, etc.)
- Exercise (even a short walk after work helps clear your head). Having regular physical activity increases heart capacity and improves breathing, essential for getting a good night's sleep.
- In the evening, prefer a light meal so as not to disturb sleep due to difficult digestion.
- Take breaks at least every 2-3 hours so you don't focus on your computer
- Stop using your smartphone and computer at least 30 minutes before bed
- Place your smartphone in “airplane” mode during your sleep to avoid excessive waves during sleep.
- Start your day with one or two large glasses of still, lukewarm water 30 minutes before breakfast. Water helps wake up your body which will be more reactive during the day and also helps you digest your breakfast better.
- Try to drink a glass of plain, lukewarm water 30 minutes before each meal.
- Avoid taking showers with water that is too hot. Warm or cool water helps stimulate blood circulation
- Try yoga or meditation! Both are powerful relaxants and anti-stress. They also improve breathing.
